FAQ: Set Power Options and Disable Power Management

To prevent the computer and USB powered devices from “going to sleep,” changes to Windows Power Options and Power Management are necessary.

  1. Click on ‘Start’ or Windows icon in taskbar

  2. Type power in search box

  3. Select' Power & Sleep Settings' from search results

     

    1. Screen:

      1. On battery power, turn off after: Select ‘Never’ from drop-down menu

      2. When plugged in, turn off after: Select ‘Never’ from drop-down menu

    2. Sleep:

      1. On battery power, turn off after: Select ‘Never’ from drop-down menu

      2. When plugged in, turn off after: Select ‘Never’ from drop-down menu

    3. Select the ‘Additional Power Settings’ link

       

    4. Click on the ‘Change Plan Settings’ link

       

    5. Select on the ‘Change Advanced Power Settings’ link

       

    6. Click “+” to expand Hard disk options

      1. Click “+” to expand Turn off hard disk after options

      2. On battery: Select Never or 0 minutes

      3. Plugged in: Select Never or 0 minutes

    7. Click “+” to expand Sleep options

      1. Click on + to expand Sleep after options

        1. On battery: Select Never or 0 minutes

        2. Plugged in: Select Never or 0 minutes

      2. Click on + to expand Allow hybrid sleep options

        1. On battery: Select Never or 0 minutes

        2. Plugged in: Select Never or 0 minutes

      3. Click on + to expand Hibernate after options

        1. On battery: Select Never or 0 minutes

        2. Plugged in: Select Never or 0 minutes

      4. Click on + to expand USB settings

        1. Click on + to expand USB selective suspend setting

          1. On battery: Select Disabled from drop-down menu

          2. Plugged in: Select Disabled from drop-down menu

    8. Select ‘Apply’

    9. Select 'OK'

  4. Close ‘Power & Sleep Settings’ window

     

  5. Click on ‘Start’ or Windows icon in taskbar

  6. Type ‘Device’ in search box

  7. Select ‘Device Manager’ from search results

     

    1. Click “>” to expand Universal Serial Bus controllers

    2. Right-click on item

    3. Select ‘Properties'

       

      1. Select ‘Power Management’ tab

      2. De-select ‘Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power’

         

      3. Select ‘OK’

    4. Repeat steps for all USB controllers
